Sometimes, chasing success requires a big swing, and that is exactly what the boys’ tennis team is up to this season. With a record of 3-3 as of March 30, the team is off to a strong start and looks forward to continuing to give it their all throughout the season.
As one of the smaller sports at Trinity, it’s easier for the boys to form close friendships. These relationships are the backbone of the team as much of their success comes from collaboration. Whether that be with their coaches or teammates, the players always have someone to look to for support and encouragement.
“They help us learn different skills and techniques, but don’t yell at us too much if we mess up. They instead encourage us to get the next point because in tennis, there are going to be a lot of mistakes made,” says Junior Jonah Bieranoski.
Led by Coaches Platek and Stoner, the boys meet at Trinity West Elementary School for practice every day of the week, unless the team has a match. This typically starts with practices returning a ball either forehand or backhand. From there, they move on to volleys and full court shots. The remainder of practice is spent playing against each other, which both the players and coaches consider to be the best way to improve.
All of this hard work is put to the test when the team arrives to the court for a match. After 15-30 minutes of warmups, it’s time for player introductions and matchups. From there, each match is played and the team that has won the best of three matches is victorious.
The overall atmosphere of tennis is pretty laid back, so the boys don’t have any serious rivals, however, it always feels good to beat teams like Canon McMillan or Bethel Park since they closely match the Trinity team in skill.
Platek strongly encourages anyone looking to get outside and get moving to consider joining the team. They’re a small, close-knit group and they’re always looking for new recruits!
