What began as two girls looking to try something new has now grown into a staple of the Trinity High School athletic scene. And it’s not just at our school that the sport has grown; girls’ wrestling is an athletic sensation sweeping the nation.
Senior Lily Hoy, a founding member of the Trinity High School girls’ wrestling team, shares that she believes this growth in popularity is because “It has finally become known. Girls’ wrestling was something that barely existed when I started freshman year. Now it’s the fastest growing women’s sport in the country. Once girls realized they could do it and that wrestling isn’t just for boys, that’s when it truly became so popular.”
The team is known for their drive and work ethic, something that has set them apart from others. At every practice, at every match, every wrestler puts everything they have down on the mat. This overwhelming dedication has shaped everyone on the team, but especially the seniors (Hoy, Alexia Ashby, Elaina Ashby and Brooke Allen) into strong women who will carry with them the lessons they have learned from their time with the sport.
“From wrestling I have learned discipline both mentally and physically. Wrestling is a sport that requires mental toughness due to challenges such as weight cuts, hard matches, tough practices, and what not. Wrestling has taught me discipline in a way nothing else could and it has helped me grow in all areas of my life,” Hoy shares.
As they walk the stage and their time as Hillers begins to fade into memory, the growth these seniors have experienced during their time as wrestlers will move forward with them into the future.
Hoy will continue wrestling as she continues her educational journey at Waynesburg University, where she will study Accounting. Despite various setbacks, she decided to continue her athletic career during this next chapter due to her devotion to the sport and all that it has given her.
Every Hiller has so much to offer to the world, and the girls’ wrestlers are no different. Their strength and determination will make each and every one of them a formidable force as they start their journey into adulthood. From everyone at Trinity, good luck, Hillers!
