History is constantly in the making, and it’s no secret that politics play a large role in America’s advancement. This month in particular, it’s important to focus on the perseverance and achievements of black politicians and activists who have helped shaped the country.
Although African-Americans were not able to hold office until 1870, the men and women that took advantage of the opportunities that eventually presented themselves made an unforgettable impact on America and its future.
Former President Barack Obama, for example, became a symbol of what is possible when someone puts their all into bettering the world around them.
“Having a black president was inspiring. The Obama family proved black excellence and that no matter what oppression we face, it is possible. His presidency showed me that the black community can make it to the top regardless of our hardships. It was also comforting knowing someone who ran our country, would see us and know our stories,” says Senior Brailyn Mitchell.
In all positions of power, it’s important to make space for as many voices as possible. Variety allows for the exploration of different perspectives and experiences, which can be used to make change for the better.
To this day, Black Americans continue to make history. Currently, the U.S. Congress has 67 black lawmakers, something that would have once been deemed impossible.
During Black History Month, and throughout the entire year, it’s important to remember not just the figures of the past, but also those who are still blazing a new trail into the future.
