Take a look at this guide on dressing for success to help look and feel your best!

Dressing professionally is a valuable skill that could potentially set someone apart from others. Being able to look the part can greatly increase how a person feels and give them confidence in a situation where maybe they do not have much.

Teacher and DECA Advisor Mr. Modrak states, “One common colloquialism is that ‘you only get one chance to make a first impression’. Part of that mindset includes our appearance, and while some nowadays consider that a dated concept, it really isn’t. We tend to give credence to those who dress well in authority and expertise, and to those who don’t, we apply that People of Walmart mentality. There is a necessity of dressing a certain way if you want to accomplish certain things and gain a certain reputation – that is our understanding of culture, of business, of society.”

The expected corporate dress attire for men consists of a dark colored suit, gray or navy, with a white or light blue dress shirt, belt, dress shoes and a plain tie. Business casual attire would be considered slacks or khaki pants, a button down shirt, and dress shoes such as loafers.

The expected corporate attire for women involves appropriate-length dresses, skirts or slacks. Tops should include neat button-down shirts or blouses with a blazer. Business professional shoes include classic heels no higher than three inches, loafers or flats. Female business casual attire also includes dress pants with a blouse, or a knee-length pencil skirt. This can be accompanied by small heels or flats.

To accessorize an outfit and add a personal touch, simple, daintier jewelry and belts will overall spice up the outfit while still keeping it subtle, classy and professional.

Forbes Magazine states, “a recent study shows that people who dress better have more confidence, feel more powerful, and are more focused on details.”

There are several “don’ts” when it comes to looking and dressing the part. Do not wear revealing clothing of any type, bright flashy accessories, an extreme amount of perfume or cologne and never wear athletic apparel or shoes.

A study was completed by students at Yale University: 128 men between the ages of 18-32 participated in mock negotiations of buying and selling. Those dressed unprofessionally averaged a theoretical profit of $680,000, while the group dressed in suits amassed an average profit of $2.1 million.

In order to dress for success, there are several different aspects to consider, but as it gives confidence and boosts the chances of success, it is almost one of the most important parts of being able to achieve greatness.
