Accounting and business majors have become more popular over recent years, especially at Trinity, as there are many classes to set students up for success while providing them with college credits. The school has a business department providing five individual accounting classes along with a variety of similar courses like virtual business and personal finance.
Accounting teacher, Mrs. Husk, stated, “You’ll see more students major in business as there are more openings in the career field; every successful business needs a business person.”
In addition to taking these classes, students interested in this major should develop many skills throughout their high school career, such as public speaking, time management and knowledge of how to use Excel.
Not only does Trinity offer a CTE program to students interested in these majors, but many clubs are available to those involved in said classes. One of the more popular clubs is FBLA, also known as Future Business Leaders of America.
These majors offer a wide variety of careers following college graduation. The most common jobs are accountants, financial advisors and marketers.
There are often misconceptions about these majors, as many tend to think that these majors result in jobs that require sitting behind a computer all day. This isn’t always the case.
Business teacher, Mr. McCartney, said. “Some people think that these jobs can be boring and require a lot of sitting around all day and not moving, but there is still interaction and events to attend as you need to be a people person and have the skills.”
As these programs continue to grow in popularity, more students are being introduced to real-world skills earlier than most, especially those who are involved in the CTE program. Business and accounting classes allow students to practice budgeting, investing, and time management.
Senior Grace Cessna mentioned, “I decided to pursue this major since I really like math, and I became interested in these classes because I wanted to be able to handle my own finances.”
Cessna plays a major role in FBLA, as she is on the board and president of the club. She partakes in the
fundraising and planning for activities, and has also been a part of the accounting program since her freshman year.
Senior Emma Detrick is also majoring in accounting, as she plans to attend West Virginia University for a four-year degree and plans to pursue a career in an accounting firm.
Detrick stated, “I plan to become an accountant in a Big 4 accounting firm or do forensic accounting.”
She has been in the CTE program since her freshman year and is a part of the FBLA club, in preparation for college.
Students interested in these majors may find the accounting pathway to be a good fit for them, as they will be well-prepared for college and become more successful.
