Life is short. That is a widely-known fact across all generations and cultures. We are seemingly always told by our elders that life moves at the blink of an eye and to cherish every moment.
While at the time, we may roll our eyes and fail to let those words stick, there is some truth to it. Life is short, and we absolutely should cherish every memory we can. However, the problem in today’s world is that people really don’t live their life to the fullest capacity. They cruise through life, pushing goals off to the side and procrastinating dreams to only regret it later in life. So how do we avoid this?
One thing to remember is the humorous but honest saying, “you only live once,” or more commonly known as “YOLO!” While this saying is usually used as a joke or to justify outrageous actions, it is truthful in the way people should live their life.
Living your best life can come in all shapes and forms. For some, that could mean getting a stable job, building a family and living that happily ever after life. For others, it’s maybe to chase adrenaline and thrill, travel the world, go skydiving and meet millions of people. Whatever it may be, there are two common problems that often hold people back: money and social insecurity.
While many people would love to travel to a different continent, many people aren’t able to due to financial reasons, making it challenging for people to fulfill their dreams. While some people would love to drop everything and go backpacking in Australia for three years, they are fearful about what people might think of them and being shunned when they return.
The solution to these two problems– YOLO! While these problems may seem very serious, they are only temporary. Money can always come back, and there are always new friends to be made.
As high school students, we still have our entire lives ahead of us. But do not let that deter you from achieving your dreams, small and big. Just like it’s never too late to start living, it’s never too early, either.
