Within the ever changing society of the United States of America, schools have been changing how they operate. Recently, libraries are being replaced with more work and technology-driven areas. Reading in general is not as common as it used to be due to growing technological advancements.
Due to the growing popularity of technology, handheld books have lost their popularity. As a result, many school are replacing their libraries and librarians with alternate spaces.
English teacher Mr. Swarrow stated, “Advancing with the times are what schools are doing with the space. Reading is so vital that I don’t think it’s beneficial.”
However, there are still a lot of people who enjoy reading, despite the fact that public and school libraries are disappearing. Online books have become more popular because of their easy accessibility. Kindles also don’t take up much space in someone’s home. Even though libraries aren’t as popular anymore, people can still read due to online libraries on said devices. This is an example of how technology is taking over activities in today’s society.
“I think a lot of people read on their kindles now, and the use of the phones have created a fragmented attention span,” said English teacher Ms. Denman.
The evolving times bring many opportunities for change and improvement for the future of society. Libraries might never make a comeback but book lovers will still continue on their reading adventures as the schools in the United States accommodate the needs of the students.
