John Cena, one of WWE’s most accomplished and recognizable performers, has officially retired from in-ring competition following his planned final appearance at the Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. on December 13, 2025. This will be the final match of his farewell tour, closing out the tour and kicking off retirement.
WWE confirmed Cena’s retirement, closing a career that began in 2002 and helped define the company for more than two decades. Cena joined WWE in 2002 and quickly became one of the brand’s foundational stars. Over the course of his career, he earned 16 recognized world championship reigns, tying Ric Flair for the most in WWE history. His “Never Give Up” motto became a central part of WWE’s public image and youth outreach efforts.
Cena’s consistent presence throughout the 2000s and 2010s made him a notable figure in the company’s growth and mainstream visibility.
In 2024, Cena announced that 2025 would mark his final year, culminating with his farewell match.
When discussing with People Magazine why he chose to bring his wrestling career to a close, he stated: “This is it. I’m done. I’m at a point in my life where I want to reflect on the past and everything that’s been done. I’m grateful, but it’s time to close this chapter.”
Cena remains well known for his extensive philanthropic work, particularly his record-setting involvement with the Make-A-Wish Foundation, where he has granted more wishes than any other public figure. His charity work played a major role in shaping his public reputation all throughout his wrestling career.
Outside of WWE, Cena developed a successful career in the film industry, appearing in “The Suicide Squad,” “Bumblebee,” “F9” and the “Peacemaker” series. His acting schedule has made his WWE availability significantly limited since 2017, seriously influencing retirement.
Cena’s retirement marks the end of one of the most influential careers in WWE history. He leaves behind an exhaustive list of accomplishments, an extensive charitable record and a reputation as one of the company’s most reliable ambassadors.
While WWE has not announced whether Cena will remain involved in a non-wrestling capacity, his exit from active competition formally concludes a major era for the organization. Cena’s influence will continue to resonate across multiple generations of fans, both inside and outside of the ring. The legacy of dedication, perseverance and commitment to his craft will remain a defining force in the company for years to come.
