The biggest night in sports was held on February 9, 2025, in New Orleans, LA, as the Kansas City Chiefs faced off against the Philadelphia Eagles. Not only did the Eagles score the Lombardi with a successful 18-point win, but the usual Super Bowl festivities also took place with the Apple Music halftime show and many of the iconic commercials.
After a rendition of the Star Spangled Banner, performed by Jon Batiste, the game kicked off with fans on the edge of their seats. Were the Chiefs going to get their 3-peat, or would the Eagles finally get revenge from Super Bowl 57?
The first half was all Eagles 24-0, with significant scoring plays from QB Jalen Hurts and WR AJ Brown. The most notable play in the first half was the Cooper DeJean Pick 6. This rookie has become a popular cornerback in Philadelphia and he celebrated the end of his birthday as a Super Bowl champion.
The second half concluded with an event many people in America and worldwide have been waiting for: the halftime show. in 1967, the first halftime show featured a college band and two men flying in jet packs. In 1993, Michael Jackson set the highest bar for artists to come and perform during the halftime show.
Fast forward to 2025, and one of the biggest artists of a generation and the year, Kendrick Lamar, takes the stage and puts on a breathtaking performance. Playing an array of hit songs in his catalog like “DNA,” “squabble up,” “All The Stars” with artist SZA and his biggest song of the year “Not Like Us.”
The performance also featured highly dedicated choreography and visuals throughout. Lamar used symbolism as an important part of his show, representing and educating the audience on modern systematic racism in America with references to being called “ghetto” and the saying “40 acres and a mule,” which referenced broken land promises in the late 1800’s. Altogether, this halftime show lived up to the hype and was one to be remembered for many years.
In the second half, the Chiefs made a few scoring plays, two touchdowns from Xavier Worthy and one from Deandre Hopkins. Those few successful plays from the Chiefs weren’t enough to pass up the Eagles, losing 40-22.
Philadelphia’s defense played a major component in their win, as they sacked Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes six times in the game. The Chiefs’ three turnovers compared to the Eagles’ zero contributed tremendously to their victory.
“It was the worst Playoff game the Chiefs have been in,” Sophomore and Chiefs Fan Kaylee Stein says.
Raising the Vince Lombardi trophy, Eagles owner Jeffery Lurie, General Manager Howie Roseman, coaches, players and Super Bowl MVP Jalen Hurts took in the moment under the confetti as they were named the Super Bowl 59 Champions.
“I think I couldn’t do any of these things without the guys around me. We got a special group this year; we’re able to learn from the past, get a few nice new pieces and get over that hump,” the MVP said in an interview with Erin Andrews.
