As students begin to consider their futures, many turn to the vocational-technical program as a way to gain real-world experience and career direction before graduating high school. The program offers students the chance to explore specific fields while building practical skills that can be applied immediately after graduation.
For many students, the decision to join vo-tech starts with a clear interest in a hands-on career path and the desire to gain a wide range of useful skills that go beyond technical knowledge.
“I liked that it is a very different experience compared to the traditional classroom setting. It is very hands-on and allows for a lot of independence and problem solving,” shares welding Senior Madison Wasalasky.
Unlike traditional classes, vo-tech allows students to actively engage in their chosen field which can make learning more relevant and purposeful for some.
These skills often include communication, time management and problem-solving, all of which are essential in the workplace.
When it comes to life after high school, students have different plans.
“I’ve enjoyed learning welding and all the positions. Being able to learn with my friends helped guide my career interest. I plan on pursuing PA Transformers,” Senior Nicholas Willhoft explained.
Confidence in future career paths is another common theme among vo-tech students, with many feeling that the hands-on experience and exposure to real job environments give them a clearer sense of direction.
A major benefit of the program is the opportunity to gain real-world experience before graduation. These experiences can include internships, job shadowing or working with industry professionals.
Whether students choose to start working immediately or pursue further education, the program helps them feel more prepared for either path.
Wasalasky continues, “The program has provided me the opportunity to experience how it would be, having to make decisions on the spot and help decide if I really do want to pursue a career in the welding field.”
Overall, the vo-tech program provides valuable opportunities that set it apart from traditional education. The combination of hands-on learning and career preparation is a major benefit and the opportunity to explore careers early can make a lasting impact on their decisions after graduation.
With the skills and experience gained through the vo-tech program, students are taking important steps toward successful careers after high school.
