Halloween is right around the corner, Hillers! Whether you are watching classic horror movies at home or new releases in a local theater, there is no better time to watch this genre of films than the month of October. Horror movies have changed pop culture and influenced the media tremendously.
In 1896, George Mellies made a film translated as “The Haunted Castle,” which is said to have been the first horror movie created. Since then, classic movies such as “The Shining,” “The Exorcist” and “Scream” have changed the movie industry and became some of the best movies ever made.
Staff Writer Bella Feriozzi says her favorite horror movie in the last 10 years would be “The Conjuring” series because “they connect the storyline of the movies very well.”
Horror villains have become a huge part of pop culture such as Michael Myers, Jason Voorhees and Freddy Kruger. These horror characters make great Halloween costumes and are a must-see when out on Halloween night. Other popular horror characters that make great costumes include Leatherface, Ghostface, Art the Clown and Pennywise.
On the topic of Art the Clown, “Terrifier 3” is one of the new horror movies that came out in October. Other horror films making their release are “Speak No Evil,” “Smile 2,” “Never Let Go” and “Monster Summer.” Watching these types of movies in theaters is a great way to get into the Halloween spirit.
Staff Writer and horror movie lover Blake Stanley says that the Phoenix Theater in Bridgeville, PA is the best place to watch new movies because of their comfortable seats.
Even if horror movies aren’t your jam, there are many more Halloween movies that don’t give you that scary feeling. “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown” gives that nostalgic feeling of childhood Halloween with the Peanuts gang. “Hubie Halloween” is another great Halloween comedy on Netflix starring Adam Sandler, Julie Bowen, Noah Schnapp and many other stars.
Feriozzi and Stanley both agree that snacks are an important part to a great movie experience. They recommend popcorn and candy, specifically Caramel M&Ms.
Whatever your scare level is, there are many movies that can satisfy it this October. Happy Halloween, THS!
