The Fear Street movies were released in a series of three weeks. Do the main characters defeat the curse or is this just the beginning?

In July of 2021, Netflix released a trilogy over three weeks that blew many viewers away. The Fear Street Trilogy was all over Netflix and many viewers were almost jumping out of their seats waiting for the next movie to be released the next week.

This three-part movie series takes inspiration from the Fear Street books written by R.L. Stine. Some scenes in the movies can be related to a multitude of books in the series.

The movies are geared toward older teens and young adults because of the sensitive topics that come up multiple times throughout the movies such as drug misuse, violence and language.

Fear Street – 1994:

The first rendition in this trilogy starts off quite dark by introducing the watchers to the killer and the first set of victims. I found the credits before the movie quite interesting as they gave the watcher a background on what had been happening in Shadyside since 1666. The plot in the movie was very original and unexpected and had many turns of events. The movie had a good amount of gore and blood throughout the entire film and many beloved characters are lost during points, which also gives this movie some scare factor. This movie also gave some LGBTQ+ representation, which was a big surprise as many horror films don’t. The romantic parts of the movie fit in quite well in between the jump scares and horror pieces. I would personally give this movie a 6/10. It was pretty good and had many redeeming qualities, but some plotholes hurt the full delivery of the show.

Fear Street – 1978:

The second rendition in this trilogy starts with a continuation of the first movie. The characters are desperate to find out more about the one survivor of all these massacres. Once they track her down, she tells them a story of what happened to her and that starts the watchers into the movie. I found the way they incorporated both sets of casts and connected both movies to be exciting to watch. This movie had a lot of swearing throughout, so it is probably not a good movie for younger teens to watch. This movie also gives background information on the previous killers and shows the watcher their stories towards the end of the movie. We also get to see more scenes dealing with possession and a witch that the whole town believes is behind the multiple murders. The ending of the movie sets up the watcher to see the final piece of the trilogy. All in all, I give this movie an 8/10. The movie was good and showed the watcher so much insight into the background of Shadyside and the curse that surrounds the town.

Fear Street – 1666:

The third and final rendition in this trilogy starts by repeating the last scene of the second movie. The characters are from both the first and second movies, which allows the viewers to really connect to this movie. The setting of this movie is the settlement before it was Shadyside. It gives background on the witch and explains who she really is. This movie fills in many of the plotholes that are in the previous two by providing more insight into the witch and the curse. It shows how the curse started and what it entailed for the town in 1666. The movie also gives detail into Sarah Fier, the witch, and what her wants were all along. I enjoyed this movie and I felt it was the film that went the most in-depth and was a good horror movie. It also had a surprise and had a continuation to the first film. In the continuation, the main characters from the first movie go out to try and stop the curse with the newfound information that will hopefully save everyone in Shadyside and expose the truth. The ending of this trilogy has an after-credit scene that leaves a few things up to the watcher’s interpretation. I believe this movie is a 9/10. It gave me chills the first time I watched it and perfectly wrapped up this trilogy and gave all the information that had been previously missing.

Final Review:

To end out this review, I believe that this trilogy included some of the best horror movies to come out of this year. I highly recommend these movies to anyone looking for good movies to watch with their friends or on their own. The after-credits scene in the last movie also left room for more movies in this series.

The cast themselves were incredibly easy to fall in love with and they added a lot to the movies. The amount of detail and effort that they put in was shown throughout the movies in multiple different ways.

Fans are split 50/50 on whether there should be more movies or not. I believe that if there were to be more movies relating to Fear Street and the previous years it would be interesting to see the characters from the previous decades and if the people during that time were also trying to figure out the curse. The Fear Street trilogy was a great series and some of my favorite movies this year. I believe that more movies in the future would help the franchise become bigger.
