The Pitt Panther mascot and Penn State Nittany Lion mascot show off the schools’ rival spirit just like Towers and Engle!

Seniors Joie Engle and Lucie Towers have committed to their home for the next chapter of their lives. However, Engle is going to Penn State and Towers is going to Pitt. The Pitt vs Penn State rivalry concerning which university is better is known state-wide. Here’s what Towers has to say about Pitt and what Engle has to say about Penn State.

When did you commit to your university?

Towers: “I committed to Pitt in December of 2020.”

Engle: “I committed to Penn State in December 2020.”

Why did you decide that your university was the right school for you?

Towers: “I wanted to go to a big school and still be close to home. I loved being in the city and how different it is than anything I am used to.”

Engle: “They have one of the greatest umbrellas of alumni that will create unspeakable opportunities. Not to mention the communications school is very good.”

What will you be majoring in at your university?

Towers: “I am majoring in history on a pre-law track.”

Engle: “Public relations.”

How did your university stand out against the other schools that you applied to/were interested in?

Towers: “Pitt stood out to me because it was in a city and had everything I ever wanted in a school.”

Engle: “It was close enough to home that if I needed to go home I could, but far enough away I was able to break away from my family and figure out life for myself.”

Did your family take a side in the Pitt v Penn State rivalry while you were growing up, and did that affect your decision about which college to attend? Why or why not?

Towers: “Both my parents went to Pitt so I have always grown up loving Pitt. It affected my decision because I grew up going into Oakland (Pitt’s campus) and going to the football and basketball games.”

Engle: “We have always cheered for both Pitt and Penn State. However,  Pitt took dominance in our household because of how much we were there. Whether it was for dance or softball we were somewhere on the campus. As I got older I shifted more into the Penn State fan base and decided in my junior year that I would apply and become an official part of the fan base.”

Why is Pitt better than Penn State or vice versa?

Towers: “I could go on and list the reasons that Pitt is better than Penn State. Pitt’s atmosphere is so different from Penn State since Pitt is in a major city. If you are interested in Medicine, Pitt’s campus is located in the best city to be in. We are super close to all the UPMC hospitals. If you like football or sports, Pitt has a great atmosphere for that. They play football games at Heinz Field. We also sing Sweet Caroline at sporting games which are so fun. We have a better business school than PSU.”

Engle: “Personally for me, Penn State is better than Pitt due to the gigantic fan base and alumni.”

What other students from THS are attending your university?

Towers: “Ben Hardy, Allen Zheng and Skye Sabatase.”

Engle: “Joey Romano, John Trapuzzano, Kadyn Caruso and Conner Alder.”

Why should current THS juniors consider applying to your university next year?

Towers: “I would consider applying to Pitt because it is close to home but it has such a different vibe than Washington. It’s a great school and has a lot of super cool majors.”

Engle: “It’s a great education, location and an unmatched experience.”

What memories from THS will you take with you to your university?

Towers: “I will take the memories of my friends and teachers with me to Pitt.”

Engle: “Organizing all of the school events with Mrs. Aliveto, Mr. Modrak and Mrs. Berty.”
