After a hard-fought season, the girls’ soccer season is ending with hopes for a few more wins. The girls have faced plenty of tough competition so far, as they are in one of the hardest sections, but they have put up a fight each game.
Varsity is made up of 17 girls, including Senior Captains Sophia Mauro, midfield, and Cassidy Aruther, striker. Both have been playing for around 13 years and take pride in leading their team on and off the field. Being a team captain comes with many responsibilities, such as setting an example for the underclassmen, keeping the energy levels high and acting as a role model for their teammates.
Sophomore Adeline Griffith, center defender, stated, “I look up to Sophia because she has a good attitude on the field and she’s a good player.”
The team recently graduated a memorable senior class but has welcomed four new freshmen to the group. Freshmen Kamille Behrens and Brooklyn Daley have been seeing varsity playing time in the recent games and have not disappointed.
Mauro said, “With the new freshmen, they’ve helped a lot offensively.”
Being in one of the hardest sections brings tense games. The girls recently faced one of their biggest rivals, Chartiers Valley, on September 19 and had a 2-0 win. They played each other again on October 13 at the Hiller Stadium with an outcome of 3-1 in favor of the Colts.
Sophomore Morgan Stimmel, left outside back, mentioned, “Our competition is quite hard. We are in the best division, but I’d say our rival is Char Valley.”
When not on the road for a game, these girls are found in the weight room lifting with Coach Rizor or on the field putting in the extra work. They have daily practices and two games a week. Not only do they grind in season, but they also have been practicing since the summer and attending college showcases to become the best.
Arthur and Mauro have big goals for the remainder of the season as they hope to bring home a few more wins, especially for last game of the season and senior night which was October 13 against Chartiers Valley.
Arthur stated, “I think we will finish off strong, but there is no chance at playoffs.”
The girls have fought so far this season and hope to end it on a high note. Good luck, Hillers!
