Every Thursday in Trinity High School’s cafeteria, the Hiller Hoagie is served. This sandwich consists of ham, salami, pepperoni and mozzarella cheese piled onto a ciabatta roll, and it is exclusive to Trinity.
Janie Bieranoski, sophomore, believes that “the Hiller Hoagie is the best lunch option here at the high school.”
Bieranoski is not alone in her belief; many students and faculty at THS feel the same way about the sandwich. Its popularity is attributed to the ciabatta roll, the distinctive combination of toppings and the fact that it is unique to Trinity’s cafeteria.
Math teacher Mrs. Thornburg says, “The Hiller Hoagie is amazing. It is something I look forward to on Thursdays. And the bun is what makes it.”
The Hiller Hoagie is among other adored school lunches. General Tso’s chicken, popcorn chicken bowl and nachos grande are all popular lunch options.
Despite the Hiller Hoagie’s consistent popularity, the current recipe has only been served for around ten years. It was originally a genuine hoagie on a long roll, but it has gotten smaller over the years to the present sandwich, which is on ciabatta, a type of Italian bread made with olive oil. The toppings have also varied over time.
There was also a period when Trinity had a Dagwood sandwich instead of a Hiller Hoagie. A Dagwood was a multi-layered sandwich with a wide variety of meats, cheeses and sauces.
Due to its regard among THS attendees, the Hiller Hoagie is a steadfast best-seller in the cafeteria.
Nicole Hopkins, cafeteria worker, explains that “usually between 250 and 275 Hiller Hoagies are typically sold on Thursdays.”
On Thursdays, the line for Hiller Hoagie wraps through the cafeteria. Its popularity is undeniable as both students and teachers express their fondness for this sandwich.
Bieranoski added, “I love the Hiller Hoagie!”
