Within Trinity, there is a booming agricultural club, otherwise known as FFA. FFA is a national youth organization which focuses on agricultural education while teaching students to harness leadership skills. For the two senior officers, President Corbin Likar and Vice-President Sydney Allen, the program’s impact has been immense on them and their futures.
“It provides opportunities for high school students like myself to develop skills, compete in agricultural events and explore careers in agriculture,” Allen comments.
Allen decided to join FFA because of the opportunities it offered, like being able to show animals until she is 21 and being able to develop her agricultural skills along the way. She and her animals, which include cattle, sheep, bunnies, chickens, goats, pigs and a donkey, have won five awards at the Washington County Fair. She has also participated in other events around the area, such as the Marshall County Classic, WVU Block and Brindle Bonanza, and Cattle Blast.
In the future, Allen plans to become a cattle farmer. FFA has prepared her for this as she believes it has taught her vital skills, such as managing livestock.
“My future plans involve establishing a sustainable cattle farm and leveraging the skills and network I’ve developed through FFA to build a successful agricultural business,” says Allen.
Allen will be continuing her education at Washington & Jefferson College (W&J), where she will be majoring in business and also playing volleyball.
In contrast to Allen, Likar’s responsibilities as president include leading the meetings and keeping the chapter organized and motivated. He saw the Trinity chapter’s potential when he moved here in his sophomore year, and he has worked to build the program ever since.
“I joined to boost the agriculture’s image. Moving up here, I saw its value and wanted to show its hard work and business skills, not just farming, “Likar explains.
Likar has also had an extensive history of showing, where he has worked with steers, pigs and lambs. He has won many awards as well at places like the Washington County Fair, the West Alexander Fair and other shows.
Along with Allen, Likar will also be furthering his education at W&J, where he will be majoring in finance and will also be a part of the President’s swimming and diving team.
However, Likar and Allen are not the only seniors within FFA. Other seniors include Parliamentary Matthew Hartley and member Matthew Callahan.
Allen and Likar have left an everlasting impact on the Trinity chapter of FFA. The club will miss them dearly as they pass their titles on to the new senior members. Good luck in the future, Allen and Likar!
