With numerous voices talking about “sustainable” and “eco-friendly” choices, giving back to the planet can feel like an impossible task. Fortunately, one person isn’t responsible for saving the entire planet. But, there are a number of small changes that anyone can make to contribute to a healthier future for the environment, just in time for Earth Day on April 22:
- Shop With Reusable Bags
As more and more stores begin to charge for bags, stay above the extra cost by bringing along a reusable bag. Tote bags have been gaining popularity in recent years for both their sustainable benefits and fashionable look. Not only do they cut down on wasted plastic bags, but they also look cute with any outfit!
- Buy a Reusable Water Bottle
Constantly drinking out of plastic water bottles can seriously harm the environment. Cut back on plastic use by purchasing a reusable water bottle. With brands like Owala, Stanley and Yeti available in most stores, the options are limitless. Just be careful not to fall into the trap of overconsumption and buy too many bottles. Find a reliable brand and model and stick with it. A quality water bottle won’t need to be replaced for a long time. For anyone worried about the water quality in their home, they can invest in an at-home water filter from a brand like Brita.
- Shop Secondhand
Fast fashion and overconsumption contribute significantly to pollution. The most obvious solution is to research the most environmentally-conscious clothing brands and buy clothes from them. However, not everyone has the financial freedom to purchase high-quality, sustainable clothing, which is where secondhand stores come into play. The affordable prices of the available pre-loved clothing allows more people to cut back on their yearly waste without breaking the bank. - Invest in Reusable/Recyclable Supplies
Buying cheap, low quality items for everyday use can mean constantly having to repurchase and spend money. This, in turn, creates excessive waste. Although it may take time to save up, investing in reliable, reusable supplies like well-made bags, reusable notebooks – which can be erased, cleaned and uploaded to a phone – or refillable cleaning products can save more money in the long run, along with helping to save the planet.
- Avoid Single-Use Plastics
Straws, bags and food packaging all fall under the category of “single-use plastics,” which are designed to be thrown away after being used only once. After a while, this waste adds up. Avoid unnecessary waste by choosing reusable alternatives like metal straws, silicone bags, tupperware food containers, etc.
Sustainability doesn’t have to take over a person’s life for them to help the planet. When everyone is contributing, even the smallest changes matter!
