It’s getting warm outside and spring is right around the corner, which means that Trinity’s boys’ tennis team is ready to start a new season. The Senior Captains are Dylan Johns, Noah Wall, Colin Berry and Kaden Smith for the 2024-2025 season. The head coach is Lane Stoner and the JV coach is Ms. Finley. They are great coaches and are hoping to help their team make it far this season.
During practices the boys perform drills where they hit balls to each other, play challenge matches and receive balls from a machine. These practices end up being about two hours in length in order to get all of their drills in. The boys train by practicing a brush motion which is like a sweeping type of motion. Hitting the ball low or high can generate a top spin motion on the ball. The top spin motion makes it rotate forward causing it to be difficult for the opponent to return. They also like to play doubles to prepare for those types of matches. They do cardio mixed in with hitting. Since the JV team is new, they are just getting used to how these drills and cardio work. The varsity team is very consistent with it since they have been doing it for a while. Their tennis matches can fall on any day of the week from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. after school.
Sophomore JJ Biernoski said, “Our biggest rival is probably Upper Saint Clair since they are rich.”
Biernoski’s goals for this season are to win matches and win against bigger schools like Upper Saint Clair. This season they are playing against a bigger section, which means they will be playing against more difficult teams. His favorite thing to do at practice is to play bump. In this game, the player needs to beat their opponent three times in a row to move on.
Senior Dylan Johns said, “I hope to qualify for WPIALS, but it is a tough section. I work hard all year so I deserve it.”
Johns’ favorite thing to do at practice is catch up with friends since he doesn’t get to see them a lot at school.
The relationship between the team members is described by the boys as close-knit. They all like to have fun together and don’t take things too seriously. The team doesn’t see each other that often outside of school, so they try to make the best of practice and games by having a great time together.
The team is off to a stellar start this season, going 3-1 in their section and 6-1 overall. So far, two members of the team, Johns and Biernoski, have qualified to WPIALs with the rest of the team hoping to join them.
Their next home match is April 1st against Peters Township. Cheer on and wish the boy’s tennis team good luck this season!
