March is upon us, Hillers! While March is usually known as the month of St. Patrick’s Day, March also has another feature: National Reading Month!
It begins with celebrating Dr. Suess’s birthday every year on March 2, 2025, and then focuses on motivating people to read regularly.
Now, as a high school student who used to be a huge bookworm back in elementary school, I would be lying if I didn’t say that my love for reading is not as strong as it used to be. Many nights after school used to be spent reading pages and pages from my favorite chapter books, and I would read so much my mom got sick of buying new books because of how quick I would read them and want another one. Now, I can hardly find the time to pick up a book.
Thankfully, the world has changed since I was a kid, making it easier to fit books into a busy schedule. So, I want to rekindle my love for reading without taking anything away from my day-to-day life.
To start off, finding a good book is the first step on the road to reading more frequently. With the millions and millions of genres out there, it can be hard to find one that piques interest.
Romance novels have become increasingly popular with books such as “Love and Gelato,” a book that follows Lina, a high schooler who goes to Italy to visit her dad, which was her mother’s dying wish. This simple summer visit turns into a road trip to find her real family.
For some, “sappy” romance novels aren’t the greatest pick. Novels like “Where the Crawdads Sing,” where an abandoned girl makes friends with two young men, and when one of them is found dead, she becomes the main suspect, is a twist between a thriller and a mystery that is sure to leave readers on the edge of their seats. Readers can find many other book recommendations at bookstores such as Barnes and Nobles, or online at places like TikTok, YouTube or GoodReads.
Now that book options are picked, it’s time to figure out when and how to read it! Some quick solutions to this could be listening to audiobooks. Audiobooks offer a painless way to enjoy a good book without taking the time to physically read it. Audiobooks can be used on the way to work or school, while cleaning or doing chores and so much more! Many books have an audiobook option to buy, which makes it easy and accessible to everyone.
Another good way to read is to join a book club. Not only do most book clubs take the stress of actually having to pick a book, but many clubs are also a good way to be kept accountable and make time to read. Trinity High School has its own book club. Email Juniors Lily Hoy or Cadi Wright or advisor Ms. Shaw for more information.
Overall, it’s easy to begin reading again! It’s a perfect way to shortly escape the reality of the world and get away from the constant screens. So, pick up a book and begin reading today!
