Trinity’s indoor track team worked hard all season to make it all the way to championships!
As one of the most diverse sports, track consists of many events. These events include sprinting, hurdles, relays and distance running. Although some of these events are completed with teammates, most of them are individual, meaning only some of the team makes it to championships.
“We were a lot better this year than we were in the past. I’m glad we kept it up,” says Freshman Luca Mariana.
Three of Trinity’s athletes will be representing the High School at States: Sophomore Ella Sammel and Seniors Zach Noble and Jake Phillips. Sammel jumped 5’6” at States last year, and holds both the outdoor and indoor record for high jump at Trinity; Noble is going D1 for track and field in college and Phillips has set a school record, running a 7.10 in the 60m!
Led by coaches Mrs. Stanton, Mrs. Gandy and Mr. Murphy, the team worked very hard in preparation for their meets. They practiced at the indoor sports complex at the Trinity Intermediate School three times a week and stayed determined to improve the whole way through.
There are 27 people on the track team, with Senior Captains Sammy Ciampa and Peter Tysiak leading them. The team had six meets, travelling as far as two hours away, and they competed in the championships on February 23rd.
The team, in preparation for the championship, sprinted at practices; they sprinted the 100, and they sometimes ran longer distances, such as the 400. Their workouts, depending on the meet schedule, kept them ready for anything. Coach Rizor worked hard to keep everyone fit and ready.
“Our workouts were very difficult, but they were super effective and I’m glad we had them,” Sophomore Taylor Farabee pointed out.
Aside from their hard work, the team also has very good chemistry and consists of many close friends. They not only worked hard at practices, but also had fun with each other and enjoyed every moment spent together.
“I worked hard at practice, but I loved being able to mess around with my friends and play football,” says Junior Nathan Murphy.
At the recent championships, the boys 4×8 relay team finished 6th, breaking the school record (8:40.07)! Sammel finished 4th in high jump and 6th in the 60 meter hurdles, Noble finished 2nd in the boys pole vault and the boys 4×4 finished 7th and broke the school record (3:40.54)! Phillips placed 8th in the 60m dash. Let’s hope to see the team keep up the good work and carry their success into next season!
