Football season and weekly competitions are when the THS marching band thrives.
The music industry at Trinity is growing every year. Introducing elementary school kids to these programs at a young age secures a great future for the THS marching band. The marching band has 19 different types of instruments. It has 54 members, including seniors Leah Falvo, Sienna Heasley, Xavier Kahkonen, Rogan Cavanaugh, Zoe Kumpfmiller and Nate Cox, along with Addison McCoy who is in Colorguard, throughout all high school grades to perform at competitions and football games. The band consists of marchers and the Color Guard. The band members march around the field in formations and the Color Guard performs with flags and rifles. This season, the theme is Light Prevails, a bright light finally shining through to offer new, peaceful beginnings.
To obtain the skills to be in the marching band, they have two day rehearsals every week at the start of summer, where they practice putting their show together on and off the field, followed up with Band Camp in late June. During Band Camp, the musicians build connections with one another and learn about the instruments they have decided to play that season.
During the school year, they practice every Tuesday and Thursday and occasionally on Mondays for 3 hours.
Sophomore Makenna Dickey states, “Band Camp is normally the highlight of my season because it allows me to get to know other people in the group and socialize with members who play the same types of instruments as me. It’s a great bonding and learning experience.”
This year, they won their first competition at Deer Lake for the A Division, with 78.47 points overall. The competitions are a great experience for the band. Mr. Hilty, the marching band director, thinks that they have done well this season and is proud of their efforts.
Most of the students who participate in the band are members who have been in the program for many years. This helps the kids get to know each other better and become more comfortable expressing themselves fully.
Senior Leah Falvo, drum major, says, “My family has always been a music family, so it was practically natural for me to join it, I loved it and stuck with it. It’s a very fun group to be a part of before starting high school and during high school because it introduced me to so many friends that I still have now and always will.”
Although the marching band season is coming to an end, there are a few events that can still be attended such as the Washington Crown Center Parade on the 21st at 7:00 and The Washington Parade on the 30th.
