At Trinity High School, the music department is vibrant and diverse, featuring several forms of music, including the choir. It is divided into two sections: the main choir, which only participates in the concerts, and the chamber choir, which is packed with more songs, concerts and sectionals, or competitions. These are elective classes that students can opt to take during the school year, but they often require extra effort and practice outside of school.
Each section of the choir has its assigned section leader, this year’s leaders being Senior Allie Ewbank and Junior Sydney Klick for sopranos, Juniors Alisabeth Bushko and Miranda Shury for alto, Sophomore Oliver Bodart for tenor and Junior Caden Miller and Sophomore Julian Brindle for bass. The responsibilities of these leaders are to lead their section through practices and concerts, as well as be ready to answer any questions that may arise.
The choir participates in many concerts and sectionals throughout the school year. Some events already scheduled for this winter are the Washington Christmas Parade on November 30, 2024, as well as the THS winter concert on December 4, 2024. Some of their concerts have already taken place as well, such as the Veteran’s Day concert that was held on November 8, 2024.
For the winter concert, the choir will perform songs such as “Going to Bethlehem,” “Do You Hear What I Hear” and “Hanukkah Song,” along with their traditional pieces, “Hallelujah” and “Carol of the Bells.”
To prepare for these performances, students dedicate time to refining their vocal skills, often by listening to their specific parts and practicing together in class under the guidance of music teacher Mr. Komula.
“Much of our practicing for these concerts happens during our sectionals or at home with the practice tracks Komula provides,” Bushko comments.
Additionally, the choir department is planning a trip to Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, in March of 2025. To support this trip, they are hosting fundraisers such as “Cool Cash”. It is essentially a lottery game, where students buy tickets for $10 and based off of the number they pick, they will receive up to eight dollars back.
