The holiday season is officially here, Hillers! Thanksgiving is the holiday most popular for family gatherings and togetherness. For some, though, Thanksgiving is a tough time where family gatherings can be difficult to navigate. Regardless of why the holiday season may be a struggle, a solution comes in the form of Friendsgiving!
Friendsgiving is essentially the same holiday as Thanksgiving with one key difference: eating a grand dinner with close friends instead of family.
Hosting a Friendsgiving party usually entails gathering close friends and asking each person to bring a traditional Thanksgiving dish. The party that follows will vary from place to place, but having friends there to celebrate will create the perfect atmosphere regardless of location.
Traveling for Thanksgiving can make it difficult for extended families to get together on one day. With busy schedules and traveling conflicts, it’s never an easy ordeal. Rather than being alone on the family-oriented holiday, Friendsgiving allows for those who are unable to get together with family to eat a meal with friends.
“I think it’s a great way for people to come together to appreciate the friendships they’ve made throughout their lives. Thanksgiving is already a holiday focused on giving thanks, but Friendsgiving kind of puts a special spotlight on your friends,” comments Copy Editor Cameron Street.
On another note, the holidays can oftentimes be difficult for those who do not have a stable environment to look to when it comes to family gatherings. Thanksgiving is a time for familial bonding and closeness, but unfortunately this is not the case for everyone.
Given that people choose who they want to celebrate their Friendsgiving with, this new holiday provides a more comfortable atmosphere for people to celebrate family, whether they are blood-related or not.
Assistant Editor-in-Chief Cadi Wright adds, “Friendsgiving gives you a safe space during the holidays, and having the ability to choose who you want to spend it with makes a big difference. It’s nice to have people that have your back without a doubt during the hustle and bustle of the holidays.”
Even though Thanksgiving is still a great holiday for many people, consider getting together with a group of close friends this holiday season and eat some turkey!
