As the school year progresses, clubs and other extracurricular activities start to pop up. One newly-established club is the Creative Writing Club.
Due to the heavy load of AP and Honors classes, many students are unable to fit the elective version of the Honors Creative Writing class in their schedule. Junior Miranda McConnell experienced this struggle herself, so she and Senior Sophia Zaragoza decided to make a stress-free, low-maintenance club tailored to accommodate the other students facing this same problem.
This club is targeted to students looking to increase their writing skills, receive feedback on their writing and students wanting to write for pleasure. They accept any writing and offer to share it publicly or anonymously.
They meet every Monday in homeroom with their advisor, English teacher Ms.Shaw, in room 166. The presidents of the club are McConnell and Zaragoza and the officers are Juniors Addison Davis and Sarah Losko.
Along with the free write sessions they will hold, there will also be various workshop events. For example, one workshop that has already taken place is Writing Swap, where students began writing the start to a piece and switched with another after a minute, and repeat until the piece is finished!
What also makes this club particularly tailored to writers of all types is the themes that are chosen to help writers come up with ideas or get rid of their writer’s block.
The club members will also offer students help to participate in submissions to the Literary Journal, Scholastic Art and Writing Awards and the American Legion Writing Competition.
Students who don’t want to join but still want to help this club succeed can watch for fundraisers that the club will hold this year.
“Come and join the Creative Writing Club!” McConnell comments.
The next meeting will be held on November 4, 2024.
