The weather is getting warmer and many people are flocking outside to soak up the sun, but not for the Trinity boys volleyball team. Busy inside on the court, the boys can be found hard at work in order to have the best possible season.
The boys’ season has proved to be successful so far, and they have big plans for this year. Like many sports, their goal is to make it to the playoffs and hopefully win, but they agree that having fun is most important.
In order for the boys to have a good season, practicing is key. They typically practice on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The boys usually have games on Tuesdays and Thursdays and have their weekends off to rest. Practices typically begin with the basics of volleyball, and play time allows the team to freshen up on what they already know.
The team says that practices are tough but fun because of how well the team gets along. Due to the frequent practices, games and bus rides to away games, the team has become close. Many of the players have been playing soccer since middle school, and when it was off-season, they decided to try volleyball. They have all fallen in love with the sport and continue to play.
Josh Lent advises his team to “practice how they want to play” in order to have the best outcome when it comes to the real game.
The team is led by Coach Myers and captains Lent and Tucker Proudfit. Seniors on the team are Peyton Miller, Jack Dix, Jacob Jahn, Matteo Lesako, Connor Jones, Lent and Proudfit.
All of these boys have been working hard to improve their game and hopefully make it to playoffs their senior year.
Lent originally joined the team because his parents wanted him to play the sport. After some time playing, making friends and working with the coaches, he realized that he really enjoyed volleyball because of how fun and different it was. All of his hard work paid off as he is now a captain and is able to encourage and inspire the next group of players.
Junior Ryan Torboli said his favorite part of the sport is spiking. He enjoys the thrill of the game and the health benefits that come with playing volleyball.
Torboli leaves his teammates with one final piece of advice: “Everyone starts somewhere, so don’t quit if you think you’re not good enough.” He encourages everyone to try volleyball if they have the opportunity and to not give up when it gets hard, in volleyball and in life.
The boys’ next game is Tuesday, April 30 at home against Steel Valley. Be sure to show out to support and cheer them on!
