The sun starts to shine a little brighter and Trinity’s track stars are ready to participate in another year of track and field. The season has been bright so far, and players hope for it to stay that way.
In track, there are a variety of events to choose from, so high school students often find an event that interests them. Trinity offers events such as sprinting which consists of the 100m, 200m and 400m dash. There is also distance, where runners will pace themselves in an 800m, 1200m or 3200m run. Along with the running events, runners may also participate in the girl’s 100m or the boy’s 110m hurdle. Throwing events consist of shotput, discus and javelin. The jumping events are the long jump, triple jump and high jump. Students can also participate in pole vaulting. In addition to the multiple individual events, some runners will be chosen to run in the 4x100m, 4x400m or 4x800m relays.
Practices for jumpers and throwers are Monday through Friday, and for runners, Monday through Saturday. These practices consist of training for the player’s specific event, focusing on perfecting technique, and building overall physical strength.
“Track is a sport where there is an event for everyone. The amount of effort you put in is what decides how good you will be,” comments Junior Zachary Noble who participates in pole vaulting and the triple jump.
Track and field coaches are each in charge of a specific event. Mrs. Stanton is the head coach and the jumping coach, the pole vault coach is Mr. Murphy, Mrs. Harshman is the throwing coach, Mr. Zimak is the distance coach, Mrs. Gandy is the mid-distance and hurdles coach and Mr. West is the sprinting coach. The team captains are seniors Ben Papson, Jimmy Lafferty, Cooper Scott and Nakyra Paith.
The other seniors include Aaron Beard, Andrew Durig, Natalie Ewbank, Kaylee Foringer, Timberly Gardener, Giana Sasselli and Nick Stiehler.
On top of the weekly dual meets the team participates in, they will also occasionally go to invitationals such as the Richland Invitational on May 3, 2024, and the last chance meet on May 10, 2024. At this meet, players hope to break personal records.
“Look out for the people who are breaking their personal bests,“ Sophomore Nathan Murphy states.
The track and field team works hard to improve themselves every day, and they hope for a great season.
