With “The Sound of Music” concluding earlier this month, Trinity’s Musical production team has proposed “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” as next year’s show. The announcement was made on March 3, 2024, during the closing night of “The Sound of Music.”
The musical follows the story of Jacob’s favorite son Joseph, and his eleven brothers. The show was created by Andrew Lloyd Webber, a composer known for “Jesus Christ Superstar,” “The Phantom of the Opera” and “Cats.” The show lasts about an hour and a half which is, a change for Trinity’s theater department, considering their last show, “The Sound of Music,” lasted around two and a half hours.
“This show is a classic! It’ll make you laugh, it’ll make you cry, and you’ll be humming ‘Any Dream Will Do’ for weeks! In comparison to the past few shows we’ve presented, this one is more physically challenging. There is a lot of dancing and moving around. That’s difficult when you’re also supposed to be singing at the same time!” said choreographer and elementary school teacher, Miss Gross.
The show is known for its catchy songs and memorable characters. The story is told by a narrator who takes the audience through Joseph’s struggles. Fans will meet characters such as Jacob, Joseph’s father and Joseph’s eleven siblings. Although this show seems to feature mostly male parts, the majority of these roles can be played by either males or females, providing another great opportunity for Trinity’s High School students interested in acting and singing to audition for the show.
A lot of hard work goes into picking a show every year, and the theater department team does not take this job lightly. The dream team is made up of Mrs. Child, the director; Mr. Komula, the producer and music director; Miss Gross, the choreographer; Mr. Hilty, the music director; Mrs. Kirkpatrick-Moser, the technical director; and Ms. Fleming, who’s in charge of set design and construction. The group of teachers look at the strengths and weaknesses of their cast and pick a show that showcases the immense talent they have.
“When we pick a show, we take into consideration what we believe our students can handle vocally and physically. We have a ton of strong singers! ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat’ is not an easy show to pull off, considering there is not an ounce of spoken dialogue in this show. It’s all song!” said Gross.
This fall, students will prepare for their auditions, start anticipating the release of the cast list and begin working on this beloved show. Rumor has it that cardio training will be involved, along with dance training, to prepare students for the show set to open in March 2025. Trinity’s music department is known for its success and spectacular talent, so don’t doubt for a second that “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” will be any different!
