Girls’ Varsity Tennis has successful season
The girls’ varsity tennis team has been hard at work; their season officially started with their first away match versus Ringold Senior High School on August 22. The girls were scheduled to play a total of seventeen matches this season, and one scrimmage was played as their season opener against Washington High School in which they won.
The seniors on the team include: Kristina Bozek, Julia Luzar, Addison Agnew, Sierra Craig, Emma Bowman, Mirranda Rinehart, Daniella Stephens and Selah Taggart. The following girls are captains due their participation all four years of their high school careers: Bozek, Agnew, Luzar and Bowman.
Bozek states, “I would say that we all work to motivate each other to get better. Our coaches are very supportive of us and always push us to our fullest potential.”
The head coach is Mr. Stoner; he recently retired from teaching but has still remained coaching. In addition, Mrs. Finley voluntarily helps out with the tennis team. The Junior Varisty coach is Mrs. Merich.
The girls practiced two times a week. They practiced consistent hitting and their tennis IQ, which is the ability for a player to adapt to other players and different circumstances. Also, they learned how to place the ball on the court to be best prepared for their matches. Ball placement in tennis is a crucial skill to determine how to get the ball past your opponent and win the game.
Bozek states, “I wouldn’t say that we have a distinct rival, but we always make it our mission to beat Ringgold every year since that is our coach’s Alma Mater.”
Their season ended as of September 28; they finished off playing their WPIAL section doubles. Congratulations ladies, on a wonderful season!
