Then-sophomore Eden Williamson attempts the high jump, hoping to meet her goal of qualifying for last season’s PIAA State meet! She works hard in this year’s junior season towards getting to the PIAA State meet.

The Trinity boys and girls track teams are hurdling their way through the season. There are currently a total of seventy-four athletes on the team, allowing this season to return to complete normalcy compared to the past seasons. Twenty-eight freshmen are included in this number and will bring many different skills to the table.

The season kicked off with preseason conditioning in January and February every Monday through Thursday, which included utilizing the weight room and the track to improve strength and individual skills for each event. With the season in full swing, however, they now practice everyday after school with meets on Fridays. To specialize conditioning, Coach MacKinney set goals for the team.

“I obviously want the teams to strive for a playoff spot. We are in a very tough section, but I stress that each athlete needs to work toward improvement each meet. If they improve, the team improves. We also want to make sure our individual athletes work hard to meet the WPIAL standards so they have an opportunity to qualify for the PIAA state meet in late May.  We have two athletes that placed at the PIAA State meet last year (Alyssa Clutter – 100M 7th place and Eden Williamson – High Jump 4th place), so I am hoping they can each achieve their goals to return this year,” says MacKinney.

Senior Alyssa Clutter speaks about her goals for the season: “I hope to improve on all of my personal records in the 100, 200 and long jump.’

There are 11 running events that the team competes in. These include the 100 Meter, 100/110 meter hurdles, 200 meter,  300 meter hurdles, 400 meter, 800 meter, 1600 meter, 3200 meter, 400 meter relay, 1600 meter relay and 3200 meter relay. There are also seven field events in which they compete in: Long Jump, Triple Jump, High Jump, Pole Vault, Shot Put, Discus, and Javelin. In total, there are 18 events at the high school level.

The girls team for Trinity is strong in the distance events, the sprints, the jumps and the throwing events. The boys team strives in smaller numbers for the sprints, distance and throwing events.

Mackinney  encourages even more students to join the team for the next season, as there are events for everyone.

Their next meet is away at Moon on Tuesday April 19, 2022. Wish the team luck!!
