The new movie ‘CODA’ successfully made history at the 94th Oscars! Not only did it secure its place as best motion picture, one of its actors also made a historical win as the first deaf man to win an Oscar.

On May 16, 1929, the 1st Academy Awards ceremony was brought to life by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to honor the best films of 1927 and 1928. This soon brought forth a tradition of many celebrities gathering to vote on the best actors and the best movies. Since the first ceremony, they have added 21 more categories to highlight different actors, actresses, singers and other celebrities.

The Oscars have been a difficult event to score a ticket to from the beginning. Since 2002, the award ceremony has been held in The Dolby Theater in Hollywood, California which only holds 3,400 people. Each nominee received a pair of tickets, as well as an additional pair if requested, making it difficult for others to score a seat.

The Oscars this year happened on March 27, 2022, and many memorable events took place.

The movie “CODA,” directed by Sian Heder, was nominated for three different awards: Best Screenplay, Best Picture and Best Supporting Actor, and went home with all three! The movie being nominated for best picture was a historic win as it is the first movie from a streaming site to win this award.

The movie “CODA” was about Ruby, the teenage daughter of deaf parents who finds herself torn between staying home to help with the family fishing business or going away to pursue her passion: music. The movie shows the true meaning and overall theme of the importance of family and following your dreams. It was released on August 13, 2021, and is available to watch on Apple TV Plus, a streaming service.

The actor Troy Kutsur also made an incredible win at the Oscars. He was nominated for best supporting actor and took home the trophy. Kutsur played the father, Frank Rossi, in the new movie “CODA” and made the role his. He is now the first deaf man to win an acting award at the ceremony.

Another award-winning actress was Ariana Debose for the best-supporting actress. Debose won this award for her great acting in “West Side Story ” directed by Steven Spielberg. This win is historical as Debose is the first openly queer woman to accept an Oscar. Though it is surprising that it took until the 94th ceremony for this to happen, Debose’s acting and effort is what got her the success.

Congratulations to all Oscar winners and the time and effort they put into their craft. These three winners will be regarded in that community for many years to come.
