Girls’ Cross Country stands together for a picture. The girls always come out and cheer for each other during meets, creating a supportive environment.

It is officially cross country season, and the Trinity girls’ team has been putting in the work. The team started official practices on August 16, 2021, and have had after-school practices every weekday since then.

Group training started in July, where the runners balanced hard workouts, speed drills, and long easy runs. The girls worked hard on their own time over the summer, though, to improve and work on meeting their goals. This was to build up their “mileage.” Some ran up to 50 miles per week.

Mental preparation also plays a big role in how well the girls do, both as a team and individually. Some have improved upon their mental state and will continue to do so throughout the season.

“I have improved mentally since last season by having a more positive attitude,” says Seon Crumrine, senior.

The events that the girls prepare for are all outdoors, which means the terrain and weather could work against them. To prepare for this, practices are held at the South Strabane Park, and the girls, and boys, run the walking trail.

According to Coach JoMarie Giorgi, “Upon arrival, the runners go on a walk through to learn the course. Then they warm up and stretch as a team. Lastly, they run their meet.”

Aside from the weather and terrain, other challenges have and will continue to pop up. Currently, the team has a few injuries, altering game plans, but everyone has supported each other and pulled together. To combat these challenges individually, though, every player brings something different to the table. Some are stronger on hills, whereas others who have a stronger endurance are brought into the end of the race, like a relay, for one last kick to finish strong.

Others contribute in helping to build a stronger relationship amongst everyone. The boys’ team supports the girls team by cheering on the sidelines and at the finish mark. The girls reciprocate the same support, creating an encouraging vibe.

“My individual strength is being a team leader and supporting our team,” says Senior Ava Robinson.

Their next meet is home versus Mount Lebanon and Peters Township on August 28, 2021, at 4 p.m. Come out and show your support for the team!
