Michael Dunn shoots and scores!
For the past thirteen years, Michael Dunn has dedicated his time and energy to basketball. He currently plays point guard for Trinity High School’s varsity basketball team. Recently, he committed to Shippensburg University to further his athletic and academic career.
Dunn chose Shippensburg because of the connection between him and the coach from the very beginning. The coach traveled from almost three hours away to watch him play, which impressed Dunn, who was also comfortable with the program.
“When I arrived on campus, it felt like home,” says Dunn.
Aside from Shippensburg, he received offers from Ave Maria (in Florida), Army, and Point Park University. Saint Vincent College, Waynesburg University, LaRoche University and Washington and Jefferson College were also considered, but Dunn knew that nothing compared to Shippensburg.
He will be majoring in business to further his education, but he is not yet sure what exactly he wants to do. Athletic director, however, is an option he is pondering.
Upon the start of his freshman year, Michael is looking forward to quite a lot.
“I’m looking forward to a bunch of new things my freshman year, but I’d just say growing as a player and meeting new teammates, coaches, and people,” says Dunn.
He says that he will miss the people and relationships that he had at Trinity. The relationships were one of a kind, he claims.
Another one of a kind relationship is the one between him and his father and coach, Mr. Dunn.
He was asked, from his perspective, how Michael has improved.
“I’ve been harder on him, coaching wise, than with most other players. Michael was learning how to dribble the same time he was learning how to use a fork. Our children were always in the gym and with two older siblings and both parents coaching, opportunities abounded. Before kindergarten, during Hiller varsity games at “time-outs”, he would run on the court and shoot… he was a fine shot early on. He improved at a steady pace and by 8th grade, he was a strong shooter as evidenced by making a record three point shots in his diocesan league championship victory. When high school rolled around, he played JV as a freshman and practiced with an exceptional varsity team. He steadily improved all aspects of his game, and, as a senior, breaking seven WPIAL play-off game scoring records and being a second team all state selection is proof of his progress,” Mr. Dunn explained.
He also wanted Michael to know that, “I admire his perseverance and effort, his ability to perform in the clutch, and his determination. However, most of all, I want him to always remember way-way beyond putting a ball in a hoop, how much he is deeply loved.”
The Hiller Newspaper staff wishes Michael the best of luck in his future endeavors.
