With the dreary weather of February, many shoppers are stuck in the mid-winter slump of buying and wearing nothing but comfortable sweaters and durable boots. However, on January 26, celebrities were doing just the opposite; the looks of the night experimented with countless new styles, colors and materials at one of the biggest nights in red carpet fashion: the Grammys.

Overall, the go-bold-or-go-home attitude dominated the music award event this year. Styles crossed generations and genres, speaking to each artist’s unique style.

Even classic looks were taken to exaggerated extremes, such as Ariana Grande’s voluminous princess ball gown designed by Giambattista Valli. The dress’s layers upon layers of tulle formed a skirt that was 20 feet in diameter and flowed dramatically as Grande posed for the cameras.

Lizzo also grabbed the audience’s attention with an Old Hollywood-inspired look. Her white Atelier Versace gown, piped with crystal studs and paired with Lorraine Schwartz jewels and a faux fur stole, was reportedly inspired by Diana Ross, Cher and other powerful women with an iconic status in fashion.

Dua Lipa also made the best-dressed list of the night, looking modern in a monochromatic Alexander Wang dress. Her blue eye shadow, however, added a pop of color that contrasted with the simple dress design.

While some looks of the night were extravagant and meant solely for the red carpet, other outfits were simple, yet elegant. Every day shoppers can certainly take inspiration from these Grammy looks to prepare for a new season of fashion.

For example, Rosalía, nominated for Best New Artist at this year’s awards, charmed the audience in a red leather dress. Leather designs, while popular in stores this autumn and winter season, are expected to continue their popularity into spring this year. Designers have been showcasing countless shades of leather in recent months, especially in jackets and accessories.

If shoppers are looking for a new color for their wardrobe that dominated the runways this season, they should look for items in the color tangerine. This specific shade of orange works for anything from casual wear, such as shorts and sweaters, to fancier pieces, such as dresses and blouses. Chrissey Tiegen was spotted wearing this light orange color in a ruffled dress at the Grammys this year.

For shoppers who are willing to take a fashion risk this season, neon is the best option. Vibrant colors, specifically neon pink, stole the show in both women’s and men’s apparel at the Grammys this year; critics’ favorites include Yola’s hot pink evening gown and Lil Nas X’s bright-pink Versace harness suit.

Equally eye-catching was Billie Eilish, who took home the night’s top four awards: Best New Artist, Song of the Year, Album of the Year and Record of the Year. The singer wore a fluorescent green suit from Gucci, with bright green hair and nails to match.

Overall, the fashion industry is not only pioneering new designs, patterns, and colors this year, but is also blazing a new trail of sustainability in fashion.

Designers are aware that events such as runway shows and red carpet events result in a mountain of waste and require tons of energy to produce. That said, designers seem to be taking their carbon footprints more seriously this season; at the ClimateNow conference in Paris, many brands agreed to plan carbon-neutral shows throughout the upcoming season. Some designers are even experimenting with electricity-free hair and makeup to reduce waste and give back to the environment.

Overall, fashion is a great way to express individuality and style. Whether shoppers take inspiration from the latest Grammy looks or blaze fashion trails of their own, there are countless possibilities for the upcoming season.
